GPU shortages defined AI infrastructure from 2023 through 2025. In 2026, CPUs are the new constraint. Spot pricing for CPUs has disappeared because demand is now consistent and strong. Getting CPUs on spot is nearly impossible without an existing long-term relationship with a cloud provider. Reserving specific CPU types now requires months of advance planning. Some providers are turning down reservations they cannot fill.
The root cause is agent workloads. Agents do not just run inference. They schedule tasks, call APIs, manage context windows, and coordinate between services. All of that runs on CPUs. As the number of agents per application grows, so does CPU demand. Teams that built cost models assuming cheap spot compute will need to revise those estimates. Reservations made today for Q1 2027 are already oversubscribed at several providers.
